About Waltham Forest
Waltham Forest is an outer London borough, situated north east of the city. It is bordered by the River Lee to the east and by Epping Forest on the west, which form two green corridors, passing into London from the surrounding countryside. The Borough is a mixture of built up residential areas, and a fifth of the borough is made up of forestland, reservoirs, open space, parks and playing fields; it has more green space than any other north London borough. The main town centres include Leyton, Walthamstow, Chingford and Leytonstone. Waltham Forest is one of the five host boroughs for the 2012 Olympic Games and is part of two large scale regeneration projects - the Thames Gateway and the London-Stansted-Cambridge growth corridor.
About 222,300 people live in Waltham Forest, making it one of the most densely populated outer London boroughs. The proportion of residents who are of working age is similar to the London average and there are a high proportion of children and young people. The population is expected to grow steadily over the next two decades. Waltham Forest is a multicultural borough with a high proportion of people from a black and minority ethnic background and the third largest Muslim community in London.
Many Waltham Forest residents live in areas of high deprivation. More than a third of children live in households that are below the official poverty level. Unemployment rates are amongst the highest in London and there are few available jobs. Almost a fifth of working age residents have no recognised qualifications.
